The History Of Kodak

The roots of Kodak start in the 1870s when a young 24 old was thinking about having a vacation from his job as a bank clerk. This man was George Eastman a friend asked him why he did not create photographs of his holiday. When Eastman conducted some research into photography he found that it was very difficult, you had to bring lots of equipment that was very heavy and unwieldy, many chemicals to help take and develop the photograph.

George Eastman then spent three years to create a camera that used a dry plate, made out of glass that would need less chemicals. He then pursued many patents for his many inventions, he then started to create prototypes of these in the late 1870s. Then in 1880 he started manufacture of the first Kodak camera. Within one year he had left his job at the bank, was working full time in his photography business and a businessman had joined Eastman in the company.

By the year 1884, Eastman Dry Plate and film, had been created. It was the company that had been created by Eastman and it was run by Henry Strong the businessman who had joined the company just 2 years before.

In 1888 Eastman registered the term Kodak as a trademark for his cameras, and he also sold the first small camera. It allowed the public to take their own photographs without needing to develop the photographs or need expensive and dangerous chemicals.

In the year of 1892 the company was renamed to Kodak and the company had started to sell these cameras in other countries for example in France, Italy, London and various other European countries. There was even a factory in the outskirts of London.

In 1923 a breakthrough happened, Kodak introduced the first cameras that could take videos, he also sold projectors to allow people to film videos and show them on projectors, this started the spread of cinema to the masses and really helped to create the roots of the modern day cinema.

Antique and Modern Kodak Cameras

George Eastman, who lived in Rochester, New York in the 1880s was the inventor of the Kodak camera. He began his company by creating a small box camera which took photographs onto a new material called film. In the year 1888 George Eastman had received the patent for this new form of camera and called it Kodak

The word Kodak was used so that Eastman would not need to worry about trademark infringement. This new camera made a "KoDak" sound when a photograph was taken this is from what the name was created from. These Antique Kodak Cameras went on sale in June of 1888 and they sold for around twenty-five dollars each. All of the cameras had the ability to take one hundred pictures onto this new material, the film. After the owner had taken the one hundred photographs it would be sent back to the Kodak Factory to be developed. The development of these photographs would cost ten dollars, but in return they got fully developed photographs and new film for the camera. The photographs would be returned on a two and half inch circular piece of cardboard with the image upon it. The Kodak slogan at that time was "all you have to do is press the button." An antique Kodak camera from the 1800s would be worth at least two thousand dollars nowadays but if it was in good conditions it could sell for a much higher amount.

Today in these modern times Kodak has newer digital cameras that take the photographs and save them in a new way, to a memory card, this allows many thousands of photos to be taken instead of the one hundred of the antique camera, you can also delete photographs that did not turn out well. You can even create backups of your precious photographs on your home computer so that if you happen to loose the photograph you can easily get another one done.

It is extremely damaging to store photographs in sunlight, the light makes the colors fade and eventually run into each other. It is advisable to store them in a photograph album that you store in a dark place for example a wardrobe in order to keep them in good condition.

It is also recommend that you store them in plastic wallets that are large enough for you to put your photos in without forcing them into it. That way you will protect them from moisture in the air better than if they are just left out in the open, you can also place them in frames but make sure that they are not in direct sunlight if you plan to display them.

The History Of Kodak Cameras

June 18th, 2008 admin Posted in Articles Comments Off

George Eastman was the inventor of the Kodak camera, it was named Kodak due to the sound it made when one pressed the shutter button. It made a KoDak sound. Eastman noticed that the sound of the K when pressed was very strong so he noticed the sound quickly and came up with the name Kodak.

Eastman found photography to be a very interesting new technology it was something amazing it gave the owner of a camera the ability to take photographs of something then be able to look at them as if it was happening in front of your eyes years after it had happened.

When Eastman was attempting to come up with a name for the camera, he did not want to name it after himself, he decided against Eastman, but he remembered the sound of the camera, and decided upon choosing it due to its signature sound. That is how the word "Kodak" was created and used for the cameras invented by Eastman.

The very first Kodak camera made by George Eastman was manufactured by himself. It was made of various different types of wood and contained so much film that one would be able to take over 100 images. When the owner had taken all of the pictures he would need to post the camera to Eastman and he would himself remove the light sensitive film and develop the images for them, he would then send the camera back with the developed photos and the camera with new film in it.

It can be very difficult to find Kodak Cameras. You can only really find them at museums or owned by private collectors. However our store finds the various cameras from antique stores and the rare sales from private collectors for you and sell them to you at very good prices.
